God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him. - Matthew 5:3

38%  Sex addicts have eating disorders
42%  Chemically dependent have sexual addictions
50-70%  Sex addicts have cocaine addiction
Over 87% of the population of addicted people have more than one addiction issue
Ernie Larsen – “If nothing changes, nothing changes…”

Beginning of a fatal progression – most people are out of control years before they realize that a problem has moved from mere habit to the beginning of a fatal progression.

  • Marriages that lack intimacy and joy
  • Children who show the strain of a family out of balance physically, emotionally or spiritually
  • Financial irresponsibility
  • A form of religion – but without evidence of power (rigid beliefs, clean on the outside – yukky on the inside, lack of awareness of hypocrisy)
  • The usual suspects – over/under eating&exercising, numbing substances – anything that anesthetizes - even culturally acceptable
  • Depression/anxiety/discontent – not addressed physically, emotionally and spiritually

Rely on rituals
Numb and alter state of consciousness

Relief – euphoria, intoxication, numb, absence of pain – not helpful

Arrests, unmasked lies, loss of trust, and ultimately intimate relationships, deception, unmet commitments, crazy explaining, neglected needs in other areas (purpose for pain explanation), financial issues - too much or too little, l oss of creative interests, consistently violate one’s own values

Negative Consequences trigger our shame and guilt. This feeds the cycle and is not at all helpful in getting one off the merry-go-round

Commitment of Reform: recommitment, usually accompanied by a lot of loud promises and sincere, genuinely sincere stated desire to stopAbstinence, self-righteous, critical & judgmental, preoccupation, distracted, self-pity & hatred, feelings of despair, compulsions and rituals begin to escalate, continue to betray one’s goals.

Pressure builds: Deny that a specific incident or behavior is a part of a pattern, sincere delusions, rationalize, ignore problems, badger others with a different voice, minimize, argue, blame, fantasize “A lot of people get (DUI’s/see the inside of a jail, get VD)” “She/he tricked me.” “I just love my friends too much – it was peer pressure!” “The (cops, IRS, boss, spouse) are out to get me.” "My (boss/spouse/parents/children/employees/siblings) just don’t understand me.” “She/he is just a head case.”
