  1. How did NorthStar Community get started? (back to top)

In February, 1999, a group of people started what was then called Celebrate Recovery (CR) as a vehicle for getting the message of hope out to hurting people. Bugsy and Susan King had a passion for helping others find their freedom in Christ. For the Kings, Christ's message of hope had delivered them from raging addiction and codependency. They wanted others in search of a Higher Power to have the opportunity to wrestle with what it means to be a follower of Christ in the context of persistent and painful hurts, habits and hang-ups. A team was formed, and an 8-week pilot project was begun. NorthStar is still going strong. Spirituality and Recovery Groups, Bible studies, seminars and conferences have been added as God has provided the people with a need to know and the leadership to facilitate groups in search of spiritual answers to many of life's tough problems. 2. Is NorthStar Community just for addicts? Is this for me? (back to top)

It's for anyone with a hurt, habit or hang-up. Everyone has a hurt, habit or a hang-up (or two!), which is why we have such a diverse group of people in our NorthStar Community. Not everyone who attends NorthStar has chosen to name their Higher Power; all ages come together each Sunday morning; all kinds of hurts are represented. What connects us at NorthStar? An acknowledgment that each person who attends is looking for answers to the problems that are inherent when one lives on planet earth.

  3. What should I wear? (back to top)

We're casual. Come as you are.

  4. When is NorthStar? (back to top)

    * Come in person on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. or Saturday nights at 6:30 p.m.

    * Listen to messages online or watch a video online
    * Watch us on WTVR-TV6 on Sunday mornings at 11:30.

  5. Is NorthStar Community a church or a recovery community? (back to top)

Well…we worship on Sunday mornings together, and we use the Christ-centered 12 steps to guide us in our worship. We experience community, accountability, and compassion as we share our experience, strength and hope with each other. We don't have a lot of the formality and rituals associated with a traditional church environment, but we are unashamedly desperately devoted followers of Christ. Interestingly enough, many attenders aren't sure about "the God thing", and they report that NorthStar is a safe place to be "in process". We hope so. Listen to a past service or come and see for yourself on Sunday.

  6. I'm a member of another church but am interested in learning the principles taught at NorthStar. How can I do this? (back to top)

Even if your place of worship meets at the same time as NorthStar on Sunday mornings, you can always tape our tv program. It's on at 11:30 a.m. every Sunday morning on WTVR-TV6. You can always tape it if you're not at home on Sunday mornings. Also, you can order our recordings of the Sunday morning experience at NorthStar. You can find more information about how to order CDs, tapes, videos, and/or DVDs. Just send us an email. You're also welcome to attend any of our spirituality and recovery groups, seminars or conferences. One of the things we really appreciate about NorthStar Community is the consistency of the teachings in each meeting. Reinforcement of biblical principles for daily living is always a foundational part of each educational group.

  7. If I attend NorthStar, will I be on TV? (back to top)

Only if you want to! Only the first 2-3 rows are visible to the camera. Any place in the middle to back room is a "TV free zone". You don't get a free TV, but you can be assured that your anonymity will be preserved.

  8. Can I order NorthStar recordings? (back to top)

Yes, NorthStar's services and TV shows are available on VHS and DVD video and audio CD and cassettes. Our media page has all the details.
